As highlighted by scientific bodies such as IPCC, the world needs to drastically reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in order to limit climate change and the risks to the planet and livelihoods. In that regard, the energy sector plays a key role because over 70% of manmade GHG emissions come from the use of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas. While renewable fuels are now globally among the most competitive sources of new energy, the rate of decarbonization of the energy system rests on policy decisions that vary widely among countries.

This is our sixth series of ALECA Talks - Carbon Tax, Carrot or Stick This talk was intended for participants who are interested in the United Nation Sustainability Goals. Two of the seventeen United Nations goals are to "Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy" and "Promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all". Today, many countries are implementing a carbon tax in efforts to reduce their Green House Gas (GHG) Emissions. The debate follows a format of for or against a carbon tax implementation. The tax is a stick (punishment) but in order to meet the United Nation goals, change is still required and perhaps a carrot (a reward) is the solution.
